Your eyes are a very important part of your body. After all, they help you see and interact with the world! Just like a checkup for any other important part of your body, it is crucial to our well-being that we get our eyes checked regularly.
Family Healthcare offers Retinal Screenings for our patients. The retina is a connective piece of tissue inside the eye that helps the brain to form images. These exams can help detect a number of things. They can detect retinal tears and detachment, which can affect your vision. They can also detect Glaucoma, age-related muscular degeneration (AMD), retinitis pigmentosa, and cancers of the eye. A retinal exam can also detect diabetic retinopathy, which is an issue related to diabetes, and hypertensive retinopathy, which is related to high blood pressure. Detecting these things early is key to keeping your vision sharp and healthy.
During a retinal exam, special pictures will be taken of the eye. A medical assistant will send the photos for review and wait for the results. Regardless of whether the screening comes back normal or abnormal, the patient will be notified. If the result is abnormal, the patient will be referred to a specialist for further treatment.
For patients who utilize our sliding fee scale, the cost of a retinal screening can be greatly reduced.
